Malé Layover Guide: Where to Stay Before Your Maldives Resort
Updated: 5 days ago
Planning a Malé layover before or after your Maldives resort stay? Start with your resort transfer. Your international flight may arrive too late for an onward seaplane, or depart too early for a comfortable connection. An overnight stay near Velana International Airport can give you a practical place to rest between flights and your island getaway.
Do you need an overnight layover in Malé?
Ask your resort to confirm its transfer type and the latest international arrival it can accommodate before you book flights. Do not assume every island requires a seaplane or that every boat transfer operates around the clock.
Trans Maldivian Airways operates seaplanes during daylight hours and advises international arrivals by 3:30 p.m. local time for same-day resort transfers. Treat that as planning guidance, not a guaranteed connection. Your resort should confirm the arrangements for your specific flight.
If your flight falls outside your confirmed transfer window, consider booking an airport-area hotel for the first night. For your return journey, confirm that your resort can get you back in time for airline check-in.
Flights get delayed. Do not risk ruining your trip by missing your resort transfer.
Where to stay for a Malé airport layover
Choose your stopover hotel around the time you actually have available. If you arrive late and leave early, a convenient room may be more useful than another resort transfer. If you have time to enjoy the beach and facilities, a nearby island resort may be worth comparing.
Compare the full cost, including transfers, meals and the room, rather than assuming an airport stay will always be cheaper. Confirm late-arrival arrangements and the next morning’s pickup before booking.
Hulhule Island Hotel: an airport-island option

Hulhule Island Hotel is on the same island as Velana International Airport and has a pool and private beach. It is an option to compare when your priority is staying close to the airport between travel days. The hotel is a very average at best. The location is just steps away from the baggage claim so you are staying here for convenince and cheaper accomodations. If you want a more luxurious stay I would consider booking a nearby luxury hotel at one of the closer islands. But of course, you will be spending a lot on the trip so roughing it 1 night and heading out first thing in the morning isn't the worst thing. You will most likely be jet lagged so you will probably be asleep right away anyways.
Arrange the transfer directly with the hotel rather than relying on a two-minute walk to the terminal. For a daytime stop, ask about its day-use layover package and current availability.
SAii Lagoon Maldives: a nearby luxury island resort

SAii Lagoon Maldives, Curio Collection by Hilton, is a 15-minute speedboat journey from Velana International Airport. It is an option if you would like a resort setting during your stopover and have enough time to enjoy it. Plus, it is a Hilton property which is great for Hilton loyalists or points enthusiasts.
