What truly sets Punaluʻu apart, though, is the wildlife. This beach is one of the best places on the Big Island to see Hawaiian green sea turtles, honu, resting on shore. Seeing these massive, ancient creatures basking against the black sand and blue ocean backdrop is unforgettable. Always respect these protected animals and do NOT get close or try to touch them.

Where Is Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach?

Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach is located in the Kaʻū district on the southeastern side of the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. This beach is near the southernmost tip of the Island (which is actually the southernmost tip of any part of the United States!) and about 1.5 hours away from Kona and 1 hour from Hilo.  

It is a Big Island (literally) so plan to stop here when you adventure to nearby Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park or driving the scenic southern coast of the island.

The first thing you notice when you step onto Punaluʻu is the contrast pitch‑black sand, bright turquoise water, and vivid lush green palm trees. The best time to visit is during a sunny day to see the beauty of the water but even on a cloudy day this moody beach will leave you in awe. 

The ocean here is powerful, and swimming conditions can be rough depending on the day. While it’s possible to swim, Punaluʻu is better suited for walking, relaxing, wildlife viewing, and photography rather than long swims.

And then there are the turtles. It’s common to see several honu stretched out along the shore, completely unfazed by visitors. They often rest near the waterline or closer to the vegetation. Remember to keep your distance as it’s illegal to touch or harass these protected animals.

• Morning: Best for cooler sand, fewer crowds, and turtle sightings

• Midday: Bright light for photos, but very hot sand

Punaluʻu is one of the more visitor‑friendly beaches on the Big Island but there isn’t that much around it so be sure to plan ahead. There are public restrooms and picnic tables but you will want to pack food if planning a day at the beach. 

It’s a great place to stop, stretch your legs, and enjoy lunch if you’re driving around the island.
